What is the CIDB?
The cidb is the statutory body that regulates and develops the construction industry. Its Register of Contractors grades contractors so that public-sector clients can match the size and risk of a project to contractors who can handle it.
Who needs to register with the CIDB?
You need cidb registration to be awarded construction work by government departments, municipalities and public entities above the small-value threshold. Private clients often ask for it too, as a sign that you are established.
What do the CIDB grades mean?
Each grade has a maximum tender value you may be awarded. Grade 1 covers the smallest contracts and Grade 9 the largest. You are graded separately for each class of work, so you can be Grade 3 GB and Grade 1 CE at the same time. The cidb publishes the current value for each grade, so check the latest table before you bid.
| Class code | Type of work |
|---|---|
| GB | General building |
| CE | Civil engineering |
| EB / EP | Electrical engineering (building / infrastructure) |
| ME | Mechanical engineering |
| SO, SH and other specialist codes | Specialist works such as plumbing or painting |
What do I need for CIDB Grade 1?
Grade 1 is for new and small contractors. You generally need:
- Business registration documents (COR 14.3 for a company)
- Directors' ID copies
- Tax number and compliant tax status
- Contact and address details
- The class of work you will do
There is no financial track record or previous project requirement for Grade 1.
How do I upgrade my CIDB grade?
Higher grades depend on your financial capability (turnover and available capital) and your track record of completed projects of a certain size. Keep proper records of every completed contract: the appointment letter, value, completion certificate and a reference. Without these, you cannot prove your track record when you apply to upgrade.
How do I keep my CIDB registration active?
Keep your registration current and your details up to date, and renew when the cidb requires it. A lapsed registration means you cannot be awarded work, even if you have done the job before.
Step by step
- Register your business. Register a company with CIPC and confirm your SARS tax number.
- Choose your classes of work. Decide which cidb classes match the work you do, such as GB or CE.
- Prepare documents. Gather COR 14.3, director IDs, tax details and contact information.
- Apply online. Complete the cidb contractor registration for Grade 1 in your chosen classes.
- Keep project records. Keep appointment letters, values and completion certificates for every job.
- Upgrade as you grow. Apply for higher grades once your turnover, capital and track record support it.
